Maundy Thursday

The term “Maundy” comes from the Latin word “mandatum” (from which we get our English word “mandate”), a verb that means “to give”, “to entrust”, or “to order”. The term is usually translated as “commandment”, coming from John 13:34-35 which records Jesus’ new commandment to love one another, given this night.

As we celebrate together this evening, Jesus calls on us to hear and remember His Word as we live out this command in our communion and participation in our Savior’s body and blood, given and shed for the forgiveness of sins and the blessing of life together with Him and all His disciples in His kingdom.
